Breast reconstruction surgery is a type of surgery that aims to reshape or reform the breast after a lumpectomy or mastectomy procedure - usually in the treatment of breast cancer. There are many factors that Dr Najjaar will have to consider before advising you on which type of reconstruction procedure is best for you. Some of these factors include:
- Your breast size
- The extent of your breast cancer surgery
- Your willingness to undergo more than one surgery for the reconstruction
- How different types of reconstructive procedures may affect the rest of your body
There are two main types of breast reconstruction procedures, namely:
Implant Reconstruction Surgery
Implant reconstruction uses a prosthesis made of a silicone sac that is filled with either a silicone gel or a saline solution.
Autologous Reconstruction Surgery
Autologous reconstruction uses tissue, such as fat or muscle from other parts of the body to form a breast mound.
Following your procedure, Dr Najjaar will provide you with instructions on how to care for the surgical site along with prescribing any medication that may assist in reducing the risk of infection and symptoms to look out for that may signal a complication.
