Liposuction is a procedure in which stubborn fat deposits can be removed from areas such as the abdomen, back, hips, waist, thighs or underneath the chin.
The different liposuction techniques include:
Tumescent liposuction
Tumescent liposuction is the most common procedure. During this procedure, a sterile solution is injected into the area being treated. The solution consists of the following:
- Saltwater; which assists in fat removal
- A lidocaine anaesthetic to relieve pain
- Epinephrine to constrict blood vessels
Following this, incisions are made and an instrument known as a cannula is inserted under the skin. The vacuum attached to the cannula suctions the fat and fluid from the area being treated.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)
In some cases, UAL is used inclusive of tumescent liposuction. During a UAL procedure, a metal rod is placed under the skin to emit ultrasonic energy. By rupturing the fat cell-walls, the ultrasonic energy can break down the fat to aid in easier fat removal.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)
LAL procedures make use of high-intensity laser light to break down the fat for removal. During a LAL procedure, a fibre laser is inserted through a small incision to emulsify fat deposits. Then the fat is removed using a cannula.
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)
This technique may be used if you’ve had liposuction before or there are large volumes of fat that require removal. PAL uses a cannula that moves rapidly in a back-and-forth motion. The vibrations allow for easier and faster removal of fat.
